Futures Trading Hours: When to Trade ES, NQ, CL and GCHorario del mercado de futuros: cuándo operar ES, NQ, CL y GC
Futures are open almost around the clock, which is both the best and the worst thing about them. The best, because you can trade from any time zone. The worst, because "open" is not the same as "worth trading". Here are the hours that matter.
Quick summary
- CME futures trade from Sunday 6:00 PM ET to Friday 5:00 PM ET.
- Daily maintenance break: 5:00–6:00 PM ET. No trading.
- The trading day ends at 5:00 PM ET: that is the "end of day" for your EOD drawdown.
- The highest volume window is the US cash open, 9:30–11:00 AM ET.
The 23-hour session
Each trading day starts at 6:00 PM ET and ends at 5:00 PM ET the next day. Sunday evening opens the week; Friday 5:00 PM closes it. Inside that window there is one scheduled stop, 5:00 to 6:00 PM ET, when the exchange rolls the day.
In your time zone
- Madrid / CET: US cash open at 15:30, session close at 23:00, break 23:00–00:00.
- Bogotá / Lima (UTC-5): same as ET during US daylight time: open 9:30, close 17:00.
- Mexico City (UTC-6): open 8:30, close 16:00.
- Buenos Aires (UTC-3): open 11:30, close 19:00.
Check the dates when the US changes daylight saving time: Europe and Latin America shift by an hour relative to ET for a couple of weeks.
Best windows by market
- ES / NQ (indices): 9:30–11:00 AM ET is the main move; 2:00–4:00 PM ET often brings a second one. The European open (3:00 AM ET) gives a smaller window.
- CL (crude oil): the pit-hours window 9:00 AM–2:30 PM ET, with the EIA inventory report on Wednesdays at 10:30 AM ET.
- GC (gold): most active 8:00 AM–1:30 PM ET, and around US data releases at 8:30 AM ET.
News you should know about
Three releases move every market at once: NFP (first Friday of the month, 8:30 AM ET), CPI (monthly, 8:30 AM ET) and FOMC (eight times a year, 2:00 PM ET). Trading through news is allowed on Ftytrade accounts, but the first minute after a release is where most stops get run. Our economic calendar is in your dashboard under Tools.
What "end of day" means for your rules
Your Ftytrade drawdown is calculated on the closed balance at 5:00 PM ET. Positions must be flat before the Friday close (no weekend holding), and the daily loss limit, where it applies, resets with the new trading day at 6:00 PM ET.
A practical schedule
- Pick one window (for most traders: the US cash open).
- Trade it every day for the length of your challenge.
- Be flat well before 5:00 PM ET, and always before Friday's close.
Fewer hours, same rules, better results. Start your challenge and trade the hours that count.
UU.: apertura 9:30, cierre 17:00.
- Ciudad de México (UTC-6): apertura 8:30, cierre 16:00.
- Buenos Aires (UTC-3): apertura 11:30, cierre 19:00.
Menos horas, mismas reglas, mejores resultados.
