The consistency rule is the most misunderstood rule in funded trading. Traders see it as a trap. It is actually the rule that makes it possible for a prop firm to pay real rewards: it filters out luck and pays for skill. Here is how it works and how to make it irrelevant to your trading.

Quick summary

  • Your single best day cannot be more than 40% of your total profit.
  • It is not a breach: if you are over 40%, you simply keep trading until you are under.
  • Applies when passing the challenge and when requesting payouts.
  • Plan for days of similar size and the rule takes care of itself.

The formula

Best day profit ÷ total profit ≤ 40%. Example: you have made $3,000 in total and your best day was $900. That is 30%, so you are fine. If your best day was $1,500, that is 50%: you are not blocked forever, you just need more total profit. Once total profit reaches $3,750, that same $1,500 day is exactly 40%.

Why firms use it

Without a consistency rule, a trader could put maximum size on one trade, hit the target in a single session and get funded on a coin flip. The firm would then be paying rewards to variance, not to a strategy. The rule makes sure the profit came from a repeatable process, which is what both sides actually want.

What it is not

  • It is not a reason to close your account. You never fail a challenge for consistency.
  • It does not limit how much you can make in a day. It only changes how much total profit you need before a pass or a payout.
  • It does not reset. It is calculated on the whole account history.

How to plan around it

  1. Divide your profit target by 3. That is your ideal max day ($1,000 on a $3,000 target).
  2. Set a daily profit goal around half of that ($400–$600) and stop when you reach it.
  3. If a day runs hot, do not try to "balance it" with bigger risk tomorrow. Trade normally; the ratio falls by itself.
  4. Check the Consistency bar in your dashboard before requesting a payout.

Consistency and payouts

On a Funded account the same 40% applies when you request a payout. The dashboard shows your current percentage, so you always know if you are eligible before you click. If you are above the limit, the fix is the same: keep trading your plan.

The bottom line

If you trade the same size with the same plan every day, you will never notice the consistency rule. It only becomes visible when you deviate, which is precisely the point.

Start your challenge, keep your days similar, and let the dashboard do the counting.
